About two weeks ago I headed to Elsewhere to watch ‘Band ‘o’ Rama’ and was very impressed by the last band to play, Teleprompter. If The Cure and Bloc Party had a baby, it would be 5 boys, kicking and screaming. Although it was a late Sunday night, these boys did not tire, nor did the small crowd who stayed and danced After finding out about how they opened Parklife dressed as Star Wars characters, both dark side, republicans and bounty hunters I can understand how they charm the pants off every woman and man they play infront of. I spoke to the boys Band ‘o’ Rama and they agreed to let me ask them a few questions.
When did you decide to be a band?
The band started with Mitch playing some guitar, Sam drumming on a table with a DVD case, and Adrian jamming on a bass at a house party for the first time. After some line-up reshuffling, we soon met Jack (2nd guitar) and Hugh (thickness master).
Where did the name come from?
I’m Ron Burgundy?
We’ve been called a lot of things. Lately we’ve settled for Dance Punk.
There’s a big range of influences for us – some that we wear proudly on our collective sleeve, and some that are not quite as obvious. Some of the main ones are Test Icicles, Gang of Four, At The Drive-In, and Foals.
When and where was your most exciting place to play?
The most exciting gig we have played would be the 2010 Parklife show. We had just gotten our 5th member, and we wanted to do something special for the show. So we went to a costume store the day before and browsed around. We ended up playing in full Star Wars outfits, complete with Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Anakin Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Jango Fett on the drums. Yeah, Anakin and Darth were on stage at the same time, we’re not big on logistics, deal with it.
Who writes the songs?
The songs usually start in the cloudy subconscious of Mitch and Adrian, and then materialize when we jam some of those ideas out in our practice room. Mitch will usually write lyrics last – for the most part, we have no idea what he is yelling about, and we all kinda like it that way. I’m sure if we actually knew the meaning behind some of his words, we would be scarred for life.
Describe the band in 6 words all starting with T:
Turtles, Tortoises, Terrapins, Trout, Triangles and Tim Robbins.
Most embarrassing live experience?
When the Parklife sound guys looked at us wearing Star Wars costumes before we played…
When is the next show?
We are currently writing for our next release, and putting together a film clip for the second single from our self titled EP. The track is called Dinobot. We will be touring that single late this year. Keep your onions peeled.
If you were stranded on a desert island and you could all bring two things each what would they be?
That’s like 10 items. That’s a lot of items. We’d probably bring The Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Celine Dion
So thats how that goes. Teleprompter are a great bunch of boys from Brisbane and they will be sure not to dissapoint. Check out their Facebook!
