OUTSIDE IN is a celebratory and historical look at street art through the lens of the Museum of Contemporary Art’s groundbreaking exhibition Art in the Streets. The film features renowned artists Shepard Fairey, Lee Quiñones, Swoon, Futura, Mister Cartoon, Revok, Martha Cooper, Invader to name a few. Director Alex Stapleton (Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel) documents the artist’s creative process, their pitfalls with the law, the poetic impermanence of their craft and the artists’ evolution from the back seat of a cop car to the walls of a well-respected institution.

ABOUT THE ART IN THE STREETS EXHIBITION
The Museum of Contemporary Art presents Art in the Streets, the first major U.S. museum exhibition of the history of graffiti and street art, April 17 through August 8, 2011, at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. The exhibition will trace the development of graffiti and street art from the 1970s to the global movement it has become today, concentrating on key cities where a unique visual language or attitude has evolved. Following MOCA’s presentation, the exhibition will travel to the Brooklyn Museum, where it will be on view March 30–July 8, 2012.

Art in the Streets will showcase installations by 50 of the most dynamic artists from the graffiti and street art community, including Fab 5 Freddy (New York), Lee Quiñones (New York), Futura (New York), Margaret Kilgallen (San Francisco), Swoon (New York), Shepard Fairey (Los Angeles), Os Gemeos (São Paulo), and JR (Paris). MOCA’s exhibition will emphasize Los Angeles’ role in the evolution of graffiti and street art, with special sections dedicated to cholo graffiti and Dogtown skateboard culture. The exhibition will feature projects by influential Los Angeles-based artists such as Craig R. Stecyk III, Chaz Bojórquez, Mister Cartoon, RETNA, SABER, REVOK, and RISK.

This Friday 50/50 Jugglers Art Space Inc is a fund raiser show with more than 55 artists with all works being sold by silent auction. 50/50 is going to be a great first show for jugglers showcasing some pretty big names, who are all participating with the intention of helping jugglers and all its programs for the upcoming year. The Emerging Artists Development Program [EADP] works with referees from the Special Circumstances Courts in Brisbane and has been running on “less than average” funds for years now. The program is mentor and relationship based and aims for the participants to expand their arts skills into canvas work, screen-printing and drawing. This is a unique program that over the past 5 years has given leadership in the arts and social services sectors in Brisbane and plays a significant part in the development of troubled youth, the growth of emerging artists and a positive application of the rule of law through the judicial system. 50/50 is a fundraiser exhibition bringing together emerging mid-career and developing artists. These artists donate their work to be sold by Silent Auction beginning at $50 with the intention of supporting Jugglers and the EADP. The exhibition organisers and curators are Yannick Blattner, Clinton Cunningham, Jaclyn Bates and Char Chamez. The opening night is February 3rd 2012.

One reason you make art:
I’d say the main reason I make art is because I know someone, somewhere in the world is going to be using or seeing it, and actually have some sort of appreciation for it. It’s something that not a lot of other occupations offer.

Something you’ve always wanted to do, but have yet to:
Putting together an office for the magazine and my freelance work. It’s been on the cards for a while, but every time it seems like it may just happen, I hit some sort of speed bump! Fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly over the next couple years, and I’ll have something on it’s way by 2014 ha ha!

Favourite country or city visited
Ah, everywhere I have been to has been so different, so it’s hard to compare each one. Each country and city seem to have their own personalities. America was a lot nicer than I thought it would be. There is so much to be seen. I did a trip their last year, visiting LA, Arizona, New Mexico and a few other places. Had a blast. New Zealand is also really rad, heaps of cool people, and only an hour away from the snow if you’re in Queenstown.

Something you want the world to know about you:
Ha ha, tough question! I guess having everyone know that I’m just here for a good time.

Artists you admire:
There are a lot of extremely talented artists out there, and definitely far too many to mention all at once. Sometime I question why I do this gig when there are sooo many more talented artists than myself. I kinda just sit in my corner, and hope no one else finds them first, otherwise I’d be out ofwork in a second ha ha. Some of my most inspirational artists would have to be guys like Pose, Ken Taylor, Jirat James, Monaux, Meggs, Broken Fingaz, Hydro 74 and a big number of European mad men like Nychos and Mcbess. Will stop there before I give to many of my unempoyers away.

Something you do when you’re procrastinating?
Stare at blank screens, or sketch a whole bunch of crap in my drawing book. I have a bad back because of both.

What is your greatest fear?
Dying whilst doing something I don’t love. Oh, and having to face Teahupoo.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken and was it worth it?
Ha ha, that’s an easy one! Putting together Trunk Junk Quarterly was by far the biggest risk I have ever taken. Still have no clue if it’s going to ever work, or if people even like it. It’s not got us anywhere close to being successful yet, but have to say it’s good fun running your own mag, and it does have it’s privileges. Have met so many cool people since I started it, and done a lot more traveling too because of it. Well worth the risk if you ask me.

What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years of your life?
Definitely want to travel a bit more. I plan to go live in Whistler for a season or two at the end of this year. I also want to get the magazine fully up and running, and have it actually pay itself off, without having to sell any more of my transportation vehicles. So far it’s taken my motorbike, and a few wheels from my car. Getting that studio I mentioned earlier going would be a big thing for me too.

I was chatting to him over fortnight ago about how he was working reflection 2011 . He did so on his blog , so these are his best photographs and I’m throw in some my favourite sketches by the man himself.

“Now, I’m not sure who this HH is. My bad. So, for this post’s sake, i’m going to assume it’s either Heinz Hummer or Herbie Hancock. Also, I could be mistaken, but perhaps this message was meant for Chico from Don’t Sleep? Either way this got me thinking the whole day on how to compile a set of images that reflect 2011. My “year” as I stated earlier on.

It seems obligatory and a little wanky to summarise your year with your ‘best’ work. If anything your bad works play a big part in your progress and learning. So I decided not compile a set of images that you’ve all come to associate with me. I know what my best artworks are and my best photos are, but I also grew tired of them 15 minutes after admiring them.

In reality, the best part of 2011 was all the interesting people I’ve met. Now that sounds even wankier than posting a set of my favourite works, but it’s true. I’ve met all these amazing characters, people who I trust and respect and have somehow come to trust and respect me.

As you all should know by now I take photos to make up for my bad memory. So, everyone I meet I usually take a photo of. Not just to make them look good, but to capture this infinitely frozen moment at which i see them in. Whether it be that split second of vulnerability or that quirky nature about them. Well, enough chitter chatter, here are some of my favorite portraits of friends I took in the year twenty hundred and eleven.”

We are looking for artists to create an A1 poster based around a central theme “MOIST”. It can be a literal translation, or just use the theme as a jumping off point, just make sure you can explain it!

There will be a fee involved if we choose your submission, and this will cover gallery fees and printing of the poster for display.

Where do I begin? I was asked to introduce and write about my dear friend and fellow image maker TTKkdout. It feels almost like the best man’s speech at a reception. There’s so many things I couldn’t possibly write about on here. Those things you don’t want the bride’s parents hearing. Like how, when we first met up we were wearing almost identical outfits. We didn’t realise until 2 hours into our day out. That kind of thing is embaressing, let alone reflects TK’s creativity and unique mind.

What do I mean by unique? I was merely sugar coating it. I once sat and watched as TK turned one of his beloved rabbit characters into a phallus. Yeah, a man’s downstairs. Aside from the horseplay TK is an extremely hard worker. Perhaps not in the sense of working hard, but staying committed to his craft and always working up ways to improve or challenge an idea.

A fella who is technical and sketches a lot cleaner than I do. Style what matches and corresponds to my own and humour to make sure we always get along. I do recall one time where he tried to hold my hand. That was extremely funny. Not something you want to hear right? Well, writing about how good of an artists he is and all that other airy fairy stuff is boring.

Oh, i was joking about the holding hands thing; It was much worse than that.
